VoIP Services FAQ

What kind of equipment do you need to get VoIP?  In order to use a VoIP service you will need a broadband or cable Internet connection.  Some VoIP service providers allow you to use your regular phone if you connect it to a special adapter.

Who can you call with a VoIP service?  This depends upon the VoIP service you choose and the type of service.  You might be limited to only calling other individuals whom subscribe to the same service, or you may be able to call out to any local phone number, mobile phone, long distance phone numbers, or an international phone number.

What advantages does having a VoIP offer?  Due to VoIP being digital you can get many services that are typically offered through your phone company such as, caller id, three way calling, last call return, voice mail, and more at no extra cost.  By subscribing to a VoIP service you can also save money by not having to pay the additional cost of maintaining a normal telephone line.

Does your computer have to be turned on to use VoIP?  If you are phone calls with your telephone with the VoIP adapter or a VoIP phone, your computer does not have to be on.  Although your broadband connection does have to be active.

Can I use my computer while talking on the phone?  Yes.

Is there a difference in making local calls vs. long distance calls Depending on the VoIP service provider and the subscription you choose there may be a difference in the cost associated with making local calls vs. long distance calls.  You may be charged for long distance calls to a telephone number outside your calling area, you may have a fixed number of minutes you can use for long distance, or you may subscribe to a plan that takes into account for local and long distance calling.  Review VoIP plans carefully so you choose the one that best suits your needs.

The VoIP subscriber you go with may offer the opportunity to select a area code different from the area for which you live.  This could save you money if you make a lot of long distance phone calls to a specific area.  Although, people that call you may be charged for long distance if they are not in that specific area.

Can you take the VoIP phone adapter with you when you travel?  If you have access to a broadband Internet connection you should be able to make phone calls using your VoIP service in the same way you would at home.

How do I know if I am receiving a VoIP phone call?  Your phone should ring just like with a traditional phone.

Additional VoIP considerations

If you are thinking about adding a VoIP service or replacing your normal telephone service with VoIP, you should be aware of the following:

  • Some VoIP services don’t work when there is a power outage and the VoIP service provider may not offer backup power.

  • VoIP services may or may not offer directory assistance.

  • You may not have the ability to access emergency services (911) using your VoIP service.

Note:  These factors may change with new developments in VoIP technology.  Check with VoIP service providers to find out what their advantages and limitations to their VoIP services are, including 911 service.
