U.S. Sugar Producers = U.S. JobsIn an attempt to portray U.S. sugar policy as benefiting only a small number of people, critics of the policy have consistently understated the size of the domestic sweetener industry and the number of jobs it creates. The fact of the matter is that many people are involved. The critics generally cite a number of can and beet farmers, they use the figure 11,000 or 12,000, as the entire industry, forgetting the tens of thousands of corn growers, the processors, the refiners and all of the others involved in the sweetener industry. In fact, a 1994 study by the highly respected Landell Mills Commodities Studies Inc. of Oxford, England, revealed that 420,000 jobs are created by the sweetener industry in 42 states. In dollars, the industry adds some $26.2 billion per year to the U.S. economy, the research group said. The study by Landell Mills shows the economic impact for each of the 42 states involved. These figures are quite impressive. In Iowa, for instance, the sweetener industry creates 31,402 jobs and has an economic impact of more than $4.7 billion annually. Indiana benefits to the tune of close to 10,000 jobs and more than $1 billion in economic activity. Both of these are core states. Other core states come out of as well or better. Consider, also, the sugar-producing states, such as Florida, with 33,000 jobs and more than $2.1 billion in economic activity, and Minnesota, with about 27,000 jobs and more than $2.1 billion in economic activity. In Tennessee the sweetener industry creates about 8,000 jobs and generates more than $1.4 billion in economic activity. These figures help put the vast size and impact of the industry into perspective. If we look at the different segments of the sweetener industry, we get this view of the jobs created: The sugarcane segment creates about 83,000 jobs. The sugar beet industry adds another almost 89,000 jobs and the corn sweetener industry swells the number by close to 248,000 jobs, for a total of 420,000 jobs. The total economic impact of the domestic sweetener industry on the United States I $26.2 billion. Contributions of the individual sweetener segments are: sugarcane, $5.7 billion; sugar beet, $6.1 billion, an core sweetener, $14.4 billion.
