U.S. Sugar Facts and Policy

Do Americans really eat to much sugar?  Reports on the sugar consumption within the United States have stated that Americans consume more than 150 pounds of sugar annually.  Not only is this statement misleading but it is completely wrong.  False statements like this perpetuate the myth that "Americans eat to much sugar."  The fact is, the average American consumes no more than 1.6 ounces of sugar per day, which equates to, 40 pounds yearly.

Sugar Facts

Sugar is a type of carbohydrate that is found naturally in fruits and vegetables.  Sugar is popular among Americans for various reasons, people use in their coffee, tea, baking, cooking, and many other ways.  Sugar has not only proven to be a great way to sweeten a beverage or food but it also makes for a good preservative.  There are primarily three common forms of sugar; glucose, fructose, and sucrose.

In this article we will be focusing on sugar in the form of sucrose.  There are two main types of plants that contain high levels of sugar content, sugar beets and sugar cane.  The United States is one of the top producers and importers of sugar from both sugar beets and sugar cane.  Sugar accounts for 12 to 20 percent of the plant’s dry weight and is refined to produce a usable product for consumers.  There are typically no additives or preservatives added to refined sugar, refined sugar is 99.9% pure sugar and contains no fat. Believe it or not, one teaspoon of sugar only contains 15 calories.
