Leadership Tools for Personal Growth and Professional Advancement

To be an effective leader there are certain guidelines one should follow.  Here are a few simple tips on how to be an effective leader.

  • An effective leader is flexible, rather than rigid.
  • An effective leader is aware of forces in himself, forces in the group, and forces in the situation.  Upon evaluating the forces involved the leader should then choose the style of leadership needed.
  • An effective leader is honest in dealing with those individuals, which are being led.  Group members know how much influence they will have on a given issue and when the leader will use his authority.
  • An effective leader should keep in mind both the immediate problem and the long-term effectiveness of the group.
  • An effective leader does not try to avoid responsibility by the simple expedient of involving others in the decision.
  • An effective leader makes certain that necessary decisions are made—by the group whenever feasible; by himself if the situation requires.

When you are the recognized leader of a group you have certain prerogatives and power.  This is true whether you are the president of a corporation, the supervisor of a department, or the chairman of a voluntary committee.  How you use this power will affect both the productivity of the group and the freedom of the subordinate or group members.  As you, the leader, use less of your authority and power, the group members gain greater freedom in making decisions; as you use more of you power, the group’s freedom declines.

Learning how to be an effective leader takes time and is a process that requires action and continuous education.  Below are some valuable resources that can help you achieve the results of being an effective leader.

As commander of the highly acclaimed USS Benfold, Captain D. Michael Abrashoff irrefutably demonstrated how progressive management can succeed at sea; in It's Your Ship, he translates his methods into an approach that can also be applied by land-bound captains of commerce and industry.
